Why Do They Think They Can Get Away with This?

As I write this, the administration is refusing every request and every subpoena from Congress in an effort to either derail every investigation before it starts or to force Democrats in the House to begin impeachment hearings.

In word and deed, the entire class of Republicans, from Donald Trump to Devin Nunes to Mitch McConnell, to Brett Kavanaugh, to the rank and file in both houses have, almost without exception, displayed their naked contempt for the rest of us at every opportunity.

They are more corrupt than anyone could have imagined, appear to be governing based on what will make themselves more money, and give the appearance of selling American policy to unfriendly foreign governments.

Why do they think they can get away with this?

They Think They’re Smarter than Us

As shocking as it is to us, they think they’re smarter than us. They think they’re subtle. They think we can’t uncover their schemes because they think they’re brilliant and we’re clueless.

It would almost be cute if they weren’t all smug SOBs with eminently punchable faces.

Almost.

The reality, of course, is that other than the scope, their corruption is pathetically banal. They’re bad at it, or at least they’re bad at looking like anything but the most corrupt administration in history.

They have taken a party that made its name on law, order, and financial prudence and racked up a trillion dollar deficit to give reach people a tax break while spreading lies and hate to get elected and breaking the law at every possible step along the way.

They Think We Won’t Vote

They think we’re a party divided against ourselves. They think we’re going to nominate someone who is either too far left for the moderates or too moderate for “The Left.” They’re concentrating on solidifying and motivating the 43% of the electorate that is just as evil as they are, and concentrating on driving our turnout below theirs.

It’s what they tried to do in 2018 to no success whatsoever, and it’s what they did to great success in 2016.

I think they’re full of shit because time and time again, in poll after poll, we see that the single thing we all agree on is that we must absolutely, positively destroy Donald Trump in the next election.

I have to be honest with you. If the 2016 election were given a do-over on the day after it took place, I think there would have been turnout like you’ve never seen. I think Trump would have been clobbered to shit as everyone expected.

If we don’t get complacent. If we turn out everyone we can. We can get this shit done.

They Think They Can Rig It

The Russians interfered in our election in 2016 and they’re going to interfere in 2020. The Republicans won’t do a single goddamn thing about it, because they have less integrity than a trail of slug slime and the only thing we have going for us is that our elections are a disorganized mess.

They Think We Don’t Count

As real as all of that is, it’s not really why they think they’re going to get away with it. They think they deserve it. They think laws are for people and you and me but not them. They think that because they’re rich white men, and they’ve gotten to cut corners their entire life, that they get to cut every corner every time, even when it’s a matter of enriching themselves from the public treasury.

They’re arrogant, greedy, insufferable shits who have had everything they ever wanted handed to them by wealthy parents and people wanting to curry favor.

The fact of the matter is that they think they can get away with it because they don’t think what they’re doing is something they have to get away with. They think it’s just business as usual.

If, like me, you think that’s complete and utter bullshit, the best thing you can do is fork over a few dollars so the Democratic nominee—whoever they might be—can head into the general election with a war chest.
